Chapter Nine

“So go away and never come back. See if I care,” Cassidy grumbled, but there was no one in the apartment to argue back. Blake had been gone three days. Three long, lonely days. Seventy-two hours. Four thousand, three hundred and twenty minutes.

The nights were worse. She tossed and turned, trying to get comfortable. Once she had even crept into Blake’s room, and although the bed still hadn’t been fixed, she had tried to go to sleep. It hadn’t worked. If anything, it made matters worse. His musky scent had surrounded her, enveloping her, teasing her.

Then, this morning, Andy had come by with a message from Blake. His meetings would last at least another week. Andy had been very solicitous, offering to go to the store with her, or run any errands. She was grateful, but it wasn’t Andy she wanted.

“You could have at least called and told me yourself,” she mumbled.

It was damn embarrassing that Andy was the one to break the news. She’d even checked the phone to see if it was off the hook. It wasn’t. So much for that excuse, she thought to herself.

She paced back and forth in front of the phone, glaring at it the whole time. Okay, if that’s the way he wanted it, two could play this game. Reaching over, she took it off the hook. “Now try and call, Blake. Just see if I care.” Hah! That should fix his wagon. If he tried to call, he could wonder who she was talking to.

It would be a cold day in hell before she’d worry why he didn’t call and talk to her. Picking up a pillow off the sofa, she briskly fluffed it and then shoved it back on the couch.

Cassidy could see the phone out of the corner of her eye. Resolutely, she turned her back on it.

No, she didn’t care one whit if Mr. Blake Lawrence tried to call. Oh, who was she fooling? Angrily, she slammed the receiver back in place.

Enough was enough. This was driving her crazy. She had to do something, anything to keep her mind busy.

She marched into the kitchen then filled a pitcher with water and carried it to the living room. She dumped half of it in the first plant she came to.

“Be sure and water my plants,” she mimicked. That was the only other message Andy had passed on to her.

She stomped over to the next plant and dumped the rest of the water into the base.

When she thought of how lovingly she had watered them the first week, it infuriated her. She had carefully made sure they were nice and wet. And she was doing a much better job than Blake ever had. She never saw him watering them. If it wasn’t for her, they’d probably all die. Not that she cared even one little bit!

The ringing of the phone startled her. She rushed over, but before picking it up, she took a deep, calming breath.

“Hello?” she asked as casually as she could.
